The first time I read this quote, I was shocked and wondered if it was real. However, upon further review of Tolkien’s works, I found that this quote is indeed real. In The Silmarillion , a short story from the same book as The Lord of the Rings , Tolkien writes about a theoretical “Gethenian double-sexed” and “Hainish-norm one-sexed” humans. These two groups can not interbreed with each other because of a unique genetic characteristic. In the world of Middle Earth, this genetic trait is known as gender.
